AS9100 to IA9100: What Changes and When
The IAQG is renaming the 9100 series with an “IA” (International Aerospace) prefix and aligning it to ISO 9001:2026. If you hold or are pursuing AS9100D, this is the timeline as of September 2026 and what to do about it.

NASA Safety and Mission Assurance, reporting on the IAQG, estimated IA9100 publication in the fourth quarter of 2026. Several consultancies report a limited-scope first release earlier in 2026 focused on supplier oversight and product conformity.

A fuller revision, referred to as IA9100A, is expected after ISO 9001:2026 publishes.

Transition window
About three years from publication, so existing AS9100D certificates are expected to remain valid into 2029. Primes can set earlier internal deadlines for their suppliers.
Treat the dates as the industry’s current expectation, not a fixed law. Your registrar will publish its own transition plan; ask for it.

- Supplier oversight and flowdown: more prescriptive control of external providers.
- Data-driven decision making: statistical process control, measurement system analysis and capability data rather than static risk registers.
- Product safety, counterfeit-part prevention and configuration management: expanded, not new.
- Information security and quality culture: new areas of attention.
What to do in the next twelve months
- Keep surveillance audits clean. A certificate with open majors is the hardest thing to transition.
- Tighten contract review and flowdown now; it is the biggest documented pain point in aerospace shops and the first thing the revision targets.
- Put SPC or capability data behind at least one key characteristic, so the data-driven requirements are met with evidence you already collect.
- Review counterfeit-parts, product-safety and configuration procedures against what you actually do on the floor.
- Use management review as the change vehicle: one agenda item per quarter on IA9100 readiness.
- Do not buy an “IA9100 certification” yet. There is nothing to certify to until the standard is published; anyone selling it today is selling AS9100D.

Certification is not pass or fail; auditors issue findings and you close them. A firm advertising a perfect record is describing the system, not its skill.

Your certificate is issued by an accredited certification body (registrar), not by your consultant. Certification fees are competitive between bodies; the largest avoidable cost is paying an auditor to fly in.

Questions Aerospace Shops Ask Before Hiring an AS9100 Consultant
No. AS9100D requires top management to designate a management representative with the authority and time to run the QMS; it does not require a full-time quality manager. In a 15-person shop that is often the owner or a lead inspector. What does not work is giving an inspector the responsibility without the authority, which is the most common complaint we read from quality staff in aerospace forums.
On a typical engagement Connie Smith writes or rewrites the quality manual and procedures with your people, maps your processes, trains your internal auditors, runs the internal audit and the management review with you, coordinates the registrar, and sits in on the certification audit to help close findings. If you build to customer print and do not design product, you can usually exclude clause 8.3 from your scope, which removes a large block of documentation, design reviews and validation records. Exclusions must be justified in your quality manual and cannot affect your ability to deliver conforming product. We confirm the right scope in the gap analysis; getting it wrong in either direction costs you at the audit.
A free AS9100D template kit is published by Oxebridge and is a legitimate starting point. Templates need someone who knows the standard to tailor them to your processes, and an auditor will spot procedures nobody follows. The hybrid many shops choose is templates plus a consultant for the gap analysis, the tailoring and the mock audit. We will tell you if that is the right fit for you.
Then you will hear it in the gap analysis, with the list of what it would take. Quality staff on Reddit describe consultants being let go for saying exactly that; we would rather lose an engagement than put you in front of a registrar with a system that cannot pass surveillance. The four free hours exist so that conversation costs you nothing.
Most organizations complete implementation and achieve certification within three to six months when an ISO 9001 system is already in place; six to nine months from scratch or for multi-site operations. The registrar’s schedule is often the long pole, which is why we book the audit at kickoff.
